Man Nabbed for Excessive Speed in Orange Zone

A Regina man has been arrested after being clocked going more than twice the speed limit near Maidstone.

Over the Thanksgiving long-weekend, RCMP officers were out in full force, enforcing a variety of vehicle violations. “Our focus for the weekend was the big three,” says Sgt. Ron MacRae with Saskatchewan’s North Central District Traffic Services. “Impaired driving, seat belts and intersection infractions.”

But he says there was also another thing of the minds of officers - drivers in orange zones. The safety of construction workers has come into the spotlight in Saskatchewan, after a road worker was killed this summer.

On Oct. 7, police set up a laser speed device in a work zone about five kilometres southeast of Maidstone - where crews were replacing a bridge on eastbound Highway 16. “It’s a very narrow work space…really about one metre away physically from the workers,” explains MacRae.

At around 3:30 p.m. officers caught a black SUV travelling at 134 km/h, more than twice the 60 km/h limit in construction areas.

MacRae says the 42-year-old man was arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, a criminal code offence.

His SUV was impounded by police.

The man has since been released but he will need to appear in front of the Highway Traffic Board before he can get his car back.

While this particular driver stands out, MacRae says incidents like this happen too often. “Workers are reporting to me that their perception is it’s a fairly common thing,” he says, adding of the 50 charges laid, 23 of them were to people speeding in the orange zone on Oct. 7.

He says more education for drivers is needed, adding police will continue to crack down on people who do not follow the rules and put workers at risk when they're behind the wheel.
