Sexes Are Even in the Race for City Council
An eighth person has thrown their name in for a position Lloydminster city council levelling the playing field in terms of men and women.
“I’m tired of being one of those people that says something needs to be done and not do anything,” says Vince Angelo, account executive at 106.1 The Goat. “Now is the time to step up to the plate and put my money where my mouth is, or put my actions where my mouth is, so to speak.”
The 46-year-old father of four says he’s been thinking about running for about three years. “Probably since shortly after the last election,” he explains. “I was somewhat inspired by the change the last election had.”
Attraction and retention of people to work in the Border City is high on Angelo’s radar. “I was in the retail industry for about 13 years and the common theme that I’ve seen is finding people to work inside these businesses,” he says.
He says one of the keys in getting people here is economic development, so people can have something to do and places to shop and spend their money.
Something else he’s got his eye on is infrastructure.
Living and working in the Border City for over a decade, Angelo has crossed paths with many people. And it’s the people Angelo says he’ll be accountable to. “What I’m actually doing is applying for a job to work for the people of Lloydminster – they’ll be my boss,” he says.
Recently, Jason Whiting, a salesperson at Wild Rows Pump and Compression Ltd. and Lachlan Cumine, a realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate made public their intentions to run.
The first person to put her name in was Victoria McLean, who works at Synergy Credit Union. She was followed by Lloydminster Public School Board trustee Cheryl Ross and Linnea Goodhand, a lawyer at Goodhand Law offices.
Current councillors Alan Cayford and Rob Saunders have announced they would be seeking re-election.
For those considering a position on the six-person council or mayor, papers must be filed by 4 p.m. on Sept. 19.
