The shortage of doctors in Vermillion has taken a turn for the better. Vermillion's Physician and Retention Committee has signed a three year contract with a full time physician. Doctor Awatef Maulud arrived in Vermillion last month and she has already begun seeing patients in the community. Mayor Bruce Marriott says the new addition to the community has for sure relieved some of the pressure, but it does not mean the committee's work is done. Marriott says the committee is in the process of interviewing two new doctors interested in working in Vermillion. He would like to see another doctor in the community with in the next six months, but the nature of doctor recruitment can make it hard to compete with communities in northern Alberta that are offering huge signing bonuses just to get the doctor to come to town.
